Why Are GOOD Web Writers Hard to Find?

You are THE expert in your field, but you are not an expert writer.

You need to find someone who knows as much as you do, someone who is as crazy about your subject as you are.

super writerYou need to find someone as good as you, but he must be a superb copy writer too.

And he must be willing to work with you.

And he must not charge you more than $25 per thousand words.

Good luck.

Finding an Impossibly Good Web Writer

You have five problems:

  1. Finding someone who knows as much as you do
  2. IF you find your expert he must also be able to write website copy like a champion
  3. He must be willing to work with you
  4. He must be willing to put his body and soul into writing for you for $25 per thousand words
  5. He must produce a 3,000 word masterpiece every single day

Even if you find your super-writer your business will then be totally dependent on one freelancer. Not a good idea.

Let’s look at those problems one by one.

  1. Finding someone who knows as much as you do

There are two impossibilities here to confront:

  • There has to be someone who knows everything you do
  • You have to find that person

You are THE expert in your niche. It’s a narrow niche that you have chosen because of the skills and knowledge you have gained in life.

Nobody else has had the exact same life experiences that you have had. So nobody else can ever know everything you know.

The second impossibility is finding that non-existent person when you don’t even have a name.

Forget it – You are NEVER going to find someone who knows as much as you do about your niche.

  1. IF you find your expert he must also be able to write website copy like a champion

So now we are adding another impossible condition into the mix. Your expert must also have found the time to learn how to write well. Writing is a skill we all learn in school, but writing to convey ideas and knowledge in a fascinating way is a rare skill that takes years to acquire.

powerful words

It takes a good writer to make words leap off the page.

  1. He must be willing to work with you

Let’s say you have found this impossible person. He must be happy to work with you. There are all kinds of personal, cultural and time issues here that need to all fall into place.

  • He must be willing to drop all his own plans in order to work with you
  • He might have his own ideas about how to approach the niche
  • He might not like you

What are the chances? Even if your wonder-writer is happy to work with you and to fall in with all your plans, will it last? Is he going to be there for the next two years, the next ten years? No? I don’t think so either.

  1. He must be willing to put his body and soul into writing for you for $25 per 1,000 words

Writing takes a lot of mental energy.

The writing process

Top class writing drains you totally because you need to put part of your soul into every article or post. It takes time to produce a superlative piece of prose that will convey everything you need.

This is work and like any employment you can only produce your best work for two or three hours a day. Any writer knows when his most creative and productive time is and uses that to work on his most demanding projects. The remaining 9 or 10 hours in a writer’s working day are spent on research, planning and networking.

A writer only has a few hours a day to work at the peak of his ability and you want him use that time working for $25 per 1,000 words. It will take at least three hours to produce one thousand words of top class web copy.

You expect this wonderful person who knows as much as you do in addition to being a top-class web writer to work for $6-8 per hour, less tax?

Would you? Me neither.

  1. He must produce a 3,000 word masterpiece every single day

There aren’t enough hours in the day.

not enough time

If it takes a writer three hours to write 1,000 words and he only has three ultra-productive hours in a day then each of your 3,000 word posts is going to take three days to write.

Yeah, yeah, I know you will want mostly 1,000 word posts, but 3,000 word posts are better in terms of building search engine rankings, social media sharing and engagement, so in an ideal world you would want most posts to be 1,500 – 3,000 words.

You expect your irreplaceable wonder-writer to work weekends as well? For $6-8 per hour before tax and expenses? Dream on.

  1. Your business will be totally dependent on this wonderful web writer

It is bad enough that your business is totally dependent on you, but on one freelance writer you have never met, who you are only paying six to eight dollars an hour?

That’s insane.

What happens when your writer is ill, wants a holiday or decides he has had enough of you?

Do you think you are going to find another writer like him? Not in a million years.

Finding a Real Web Writer

Are you ready to compromise yet?

We all start off with a mental list of requirements that we expect a freelance writer to have, but you can’t have it all.

  1. Finding someone who knows as much as you do
  2. IF you find your expert, he must also be able to write website copy like a champion
  3. He must be willing to work with you
  4. He must be willing to put his body and soul into writing for you for $25 per thousand words
  5. He must produce a 3,000 word masterpiece every single day

Remember #1 and #5 are impossible and #3 is essential.

That leaves #2 or #4.

champion writer
#2 – Champion writer

OR

slave writer
#4 – A $25 writer

Choose ONE from #2 and #4

Because you cannot have both.

If you want a writer who can produce top-quality web copy that will be shared on social media, that will engage your readers and convert into sales then paying $25 per 1,000 words is just a waste of money.

Writers who can produce the sort of copy that you need are in high demand and will charge at least $50 per 1,000 words and their rates will increase as more people find them.

Cheap web copy is not worth the electrons it is written with. It will do nothing for your search rankings, nothing for your social media presence and nothing for your sales.

You are left with two alternatives; pay a good writer OR write it yourself.

Over to You . . .
